A Report on David Copperfield
My favourite story in Good English is David Copperfield. The author is Charles Dickens, who was born in England in 1812. He was good at describing how a poor community lived and criticizing the real society. David Copperfield is based on Mr Dickens’s early experience.
The story happened in Victorian England. It was written from the perspective of a normal boy, David Copperfield. He lived with his mother and a nice housekeeper, Peggotty. But his happiness ended when his mother married a very cruel man, Mr Murdstone. David was sent away to a boarding school and made friends with Steerforth. Unfortunately, his mother died of tiredness and David himself was arranged to work in a warehouse. Luckily, in the warehouse he lived with Mr Micawber and his happy family. However, this good man was arrested because of debt. Then David found his aunt and led a peaceful life. He was sent to a new school and got on well with Agnes. After graduating, he went to work. Shortly he found Agnes’s father was in trouble caused by Uriah Heep. At last David solved the problems and got married with Agnes. The book has a quite nice ending.
After reading, I find this story full of twists and turns, which makes the book fascinating enough. The author tells the story in the first person so that the reader can get closer to the characters and the society at that time.
David Copperfield seemed to be a poor boy. His father died before he was born; his mother died when he was young; his stepfather treated him cruelly; he had to work in the warehouse day and night; his best friend Steerforth betrayed him and eloped with Emily, another friend of his. These examples were only a small part of his misfortune.
At the same time I also think David is quite lucky. He had a gentle mother; he acquired pure friendship in the boarding school; he lived happily with Mr Micawber and his family; he found his aunt who was kind to him; he found his true love and married her. I find that David could always meet someone coincidently, who treated him sweetly and regarded him as family when he was confused and helpless. I believe this is the essential reason that he could still keep his kindness and other virtues in that society.
From my point of view, almost all the misfortune David experienced is caused by money. There are numerous examples. Mr Murdstone married David’s mother because of her property; Mr Micawber was arrested and had to leave because of his debt; the “humble” man, Uriah Heep planned a scheme because he wanted to get more money and rights. Money made these poor people struggle in life and become kind or evil. Most people only know that the Victorian time is prosperous and that people are graceful. By describing these plots, Mr Dickens shows us the dark side of reality.
In the whole story the author keeps one principle: Good will be rewarded with good, and evil with evil. So I guess that the author has a positive attitude towards life and hopes people could live better, or David Copperfield wouldn’t have had such good luck. The positive characters Mr Dickens creates may be the ideal image in his mind.
David Copperfield is a classic and still popular among the present public. Since the book was published in 1850, it has inspired many generations to be positive, to be strong and to love their life. Just like my favourite motto: Life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you are going to get.

Chapter 1
Queen Norah was showing Princess Jane the Royal Treasures.
“Then,” said Queen Norah, “What is this?”
She pointed at a model of a dragon.
“It’s er …” began the princess. “You’re as bad as King Harry. He does not care about the Royal Treasures either. This is the Golden Chinese Dragon of Tong Dynasty. It belonged to your Great, Great, Great Grandfather. The Chinese Emperor “Li Shimin” gave it to him as a present.”

Chapter 2

The pirates came to the gate. There in front of them was a cleaning lady. She was armed only with a duster.
“This is going to be easy.” said the first pirate. The pirates raced forward. The cleaning lady was in fact Captain Smith and he turned on a torch. It was so shiny that pirates were dazzled. They did not see the floor with some honey. They stepped on the honey and skidded into a hole. Then they dropped into a lovely, hot, soapy bath.

Chapter 3
“Let’s face it.” said King Harry. “You are no good as pirates.”
One of the pirates began to sniff.
“Why don’t you do something honest?” said Captain Smith.
“You look strong.” said King Hurry, “You can guard the castle gate. You should become entrance  guards.” said the king.
“Can we be the entrance guards?” said the pirates.
     “Certainly,” said King Harry.
“Thank you.” said the pirates, “You are so kind. We will be good entrance guards.”
