This is a story about a bomb, two boys and a dog.
Jack and Harry were brothers; they were lying on top of an old warehouse. There was a large bomb landed in a large crater. Old Tin Hat, the air raid warden, was on duty. It was his job to keep people out of the way until the bomb disposal team arrived.
As the boys scrambled down to the street below, Old Tin Hat spotted them. He shouted and waved his arms at a notice. He asked them to go home. Jack and Harry crouched down out of sight until they heard Old Tin Hat hurrying past. They decided to go home by Crown Street and see what’s left.
Crown Street was gone. Most of the house had been flattened altogether. Those left standing were badly damaged. Suddenly, a muffled moan came from somewhere nearby. They started to pull away some planks of splintered wood, then they heaved at a heavy door, gasping and straining until the door came away in a cloud of dust and stones. Then they peered down the hole. Harry shone his pocket torch down inside and he saw a poor dog with two big brown eyes. Jack held tight to Harry’s legs, Harry put the torch in his mouth and inched his way down the steps on his hands. After a lot of puffing and heaving, Harry managed to reach the bottom of the steps where the dog was trapped. Suddenly, mournful notes of the siren began wailing around them. Searchlights lit up and fanned across the sky. Both boys began racing towards home as fast as they could go, and Raf, the dog joined in besides them. Finally, they came in a wine cellar. Raf was too thirsty, so he tasted all the puddles in turn, lapping greedily. But unluckily, the wall on either side of the entrance had fallen in, the way out was blocked. Finally, they found a door, and they walked in the tunnel for a long time. But they found Raf was lost, so they returned to searched for him. Raf was drunk, so they made a stretcher with their jackets. Finally they got out.
But they were surprised to find that they were under the bomb! They were scared, so they stayed still until an army captain found them. The captain and Old Tin Hat helped them to get out of the crater. They were respected as heroes.
Later on, the bomb was defused, the captain allowed them to have a look at it. Finally, it disappeared with the truck. The two boys said “Goodbye!” to the captain and the bomb.
